I use a HomeBase Media Server provided by Simply NUC. Synology DS1819+ NAS is fine for what it is designed for, and that's to provide a stable file sharing environment for 8 HDDs.Ī properly built and configured NUC will handle Plex demands just fine when they occur, and will not consume much power at all when dormant.

As I have experienced, my NAS didn't provide sufficient power to really support on-the-fly transcoding, especially if you have friends from outside using your Plex server in unpredictable ways. In fact, that's exactly what I have evolved into, after using my Synology DS1819+, for a while, as a combined Plex server. I'd use your NAS for storage, and buy a NUC for Plex.
